Textiles Hub London exhibited the Mendez’s work in 2014 as part of the trailblazing exhibition and symposium The Geometrics curated by British curator Daisy McMullan and British-French artist Emma Neuberg. His work is central to the British modernist story and presents the postmodern linchpin conjoining painting with textiles.
Mendez’s interrogation of abstract composition, colour and material is a central motif of the modernist movement in twentieth century Britain. He explored the vibrant and compelling language of cultural code, pattern and abstraction in dynamic and conversational paintings. Many of these were transposed on to textiles. Indeed, he is the only British postmodernist artist who practiced painting and screen-printing textiles as an interrogative, interchangeable tool in his practice.
